TAIWAN All Over Again – Family Long Weekend In Taipei

Over the last few weeks & months, I shared with you details about our Taiwan family trip last June 2019. The whole family went on a 4-day weekend in Taiwan, also to celebrate Father’s Day for the first time outside the country. I’ve already been to Taiwan twice in the past – one in 2015 with my high school friends & another one in 2017 with my colleagues at work, but I didn’t mind going back with my family to this beautiful country. Besides, our last family trip was in 2016 when we welcomed the new year in Singapore.

Allow me to share with you the details of our tour around Taipei City. We had a flexible itinerary because we were travelling with our parents, aunt, uncle & a 2-year old baby. We missed a few historical places & parks, but we definitely enjoyed each others company. Check out the trip details below.

For my past 2 Taiwan trips, I’ve flown with Cebu Pacific Air. Both tickets were at less than ₱3,000 return. Since Taiwan became visa-free to Filipino passport holders, airfare to Taipei & Kaoshiung became expensive. I found a good deal with EVA Air, Taiwan’s 2nd largest airline, last February. Return tickets only cost $127.32 (about ₱6,600+) & the fare already included in-flight meal, baggage & in-flight entertainment. Know more about my EVA Air experience in this flight report.

Accommodation

We stayed in Uinn Travel Hostel for 4 days & 3 nights. We booked 4 spacious double rooms that came with private bath & toilet. The hostel offers a superb breakfast & has modern facilities. They also have dormitory rooms for those who are travelling alone or on a budget. I’ve featured Uinn Travel Hostel as a Hostel Of The Day in this website. My sisters have always wanted to see the flower farms in Taichung. To make them happy, we rented a car through ACWorx Tours Taiwan. We got the car for 10 hours, went to Taichung, visited the Green Fantasy Forest, Houli Flower Farm & the Rainbow Village. Check out the photoblog of our Taichung Day Tour here.

Taipei has a very efficient transportation system. All places in the city are connected by either a bus or a train. We used EASY Card, their own version of tap card, in going to different places. We bought the tap cards at the airport train station & just added value / credit when needed. This tap card can also be used in establishments like supermarkets & convenience stores.

HOLY FAMILY CHURCH

We started our day around Taipei with a Sunday English mass at Holy Family Church. It was also Father’s Day that weekend so we decided to attend the mass as a family. The church was packed with people from all over the world. I’ve been to this church in 2015 when I first went to Taiwan with my high school friends.

DAAN PARK

After the mass, we decided to have a stroll around Daan Park. The park had a nice pond with ducks & wild birds. My baby cousin enjoyed walking around the park, spotting the animals around. It’s a perfect place to relax & walk around on a cold winter morning or afternoon. Too bad it was sunny & too hot during our visit.

TAIPEI 101 MALL

We headed to Taipei 101 Mall for lunch & for sightseeing. The massive Taipei 101 welcomed us upon leaving Exit 4 of the metro station. We went around the different boutiques & shops while we waited for our turn in Din Tai Fung & our Taipei 101 Observatory schedule.

DIN TAI FUNG

We had our lunch at Din Tai Fung in Taipei 101 Mall. This world-famous restaurant originated in Taipei back in the days. The restaurant is famous for its pork xiao long bao, braised beef noodles & steamed chicken soup. We waited for about an hour before we finally had our table. It was Father’s Day lunch so the family had a feast.

TAIPEI 101 OBSERVATORY

After lunch, we all headed to the Taipei 101 Observatory. We bought our tickets through Klook on the same day & even got a discount for the large booking. Each ticket only costs about ₱600+ per person after the discount. Ticket redemption was easy; it was through an automated machine located near the ticket booth. We stayed on the 88th floor for about an hour & enjoyed the 360-degree view of the city.

ELEPHANT MOUNTAIN

My sisters & I decided to hike up the Elephant Mountain after going up the Taipei 101 observatory. We wanted to see the city & Taipei 101 from a different angle. The hike up to the viewpoint took about 30 minutes & another 30 minutes going down. The viewpoint provided stunning images of the city & of the skyscraper. I’ve been to Taiwan twice, but it was only until this trip when I was able to go up the mountain. The best time to go up is either in the morning or during sunset. However, expect more people going up during these times.

RAOHE NIGHT MARKET

We went to Raohe Night Market to have authentic street food for dinner. We got the famous pork pepper buns, pork sausages, fried milk & a lot more. The market was packed with tourists that Sunday night & we haven’t had the chance to try all the food around.

HUAXI STREET NIGHT MARKET

I met up with my good friend, Richard, after dinner to catch up & have some drinks. I met Richard in the overnight boat tour in Komodo, Indonesia. We’ve been really good friends since then. He was also in Taipei that weekend, waiting for his flight to Spain to be with his family on his birthday. Richard & I literally just walked everywhere until we reached Huaxi Street Night Market. It is a small local market, practically selling everything. This market catered mostly to the locals. Believe it or not, we had a hard time looking for a place to eat up to the point we ended up having pork dumplings & beer in a restaurant near Longshan Station.

YEHLIU-JIUFEN-SHIFEN KLOOK TOUR

One of the best day trips outside Taipei is the trip to the northeast towns of Shifen, Jiufen & Yehliu. Going to these places is not easy, especially if you’re a big group like us. XIMENDING

A trip to Taipei will never be complete without a visit to the city’s shopping hub – Ximending. This area is where there young people go for shopping & food trip. It has also become famous for the tourists because of the shops & stores located in this area. The place is full of colorful lights & billboards at night; making it a vibrant hangout place for everyone.

CHIANG KAI SHEK MEMORIAL HALL & LIBERTY SQUARE

The last place we visited before we left Taiwan was the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall & Libery Square. This memorial hall was built in memory of former President Chiang Kai-Shek. The hall has different display rooms & galleries where you will know more about the former president. On the other hand, the Liberty Square is Taipei’s largest public square. It is a place used for public gatherings during national holidays & important days in Taiwan.

Richard & I already went to this place the night before our family went. There were no other people there at around 12 midnight. However, the ground gates looked stunning with those lights.

YEHLIU-JIUFEN-SHIFEN Klook Tour – Perfect & Hassle-Free Taiwan Northeast Coast Day Tour

Yesterday, I shared with you details about Uinn Travel Hostel, the modern & excellent hostel we stayed in Taipei last June. My family went on a 4-day weekend trip to Taiwan last June. We flew with EVA Air for an affordable price & even went on a day trip to Taichung. Watch out for the post that will lay out our chill itinerary around the city.

It was a sunny day; a perfect weather to explore Yehliu Geopark, the Northeast Coast of Taiwan. 🙂

One of the famous day trips outside of Taipei is a trip to the Northeast Coast of Taiwan. This trip goes to the known places of Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen & Shifen. I already went to Shifen & Jiufen in 2015 (via a do-it-yourself itinerary) & in 2017 on a half day trip with Klook. We opted to go with Klook again this year since we were travelling with our parents & our baby cousin.

I will share with you details about the day tour – its price & inclusions, meeting place & boarding procedure & the itinerary for the whole trip in the different sections below.

Day Tour Price & Booking

We booked the day tour via Klook‘s website. We opted for the 9:00 am tour. The tour included a shuttle bus with driver, shuttle toll & parking fees, an English-speaking tour guide & a bottle of water. At the time of booking, it cost us ₱8,786 for 8 people & 1 infant – around ₱1,100 per person. The rate also included the entry ticket to Yehliu Geopark.

At the time of writing, Klook offers the tour at a cheaper rate of ₱975, including the Geopark entry ticket. No idea why it’s cheaper than our trip – maybe because it was peak season during? Anyway, there’s no need to print the Klook voucher; you can present it using your phone on the day of the tour.

Tip: Full names, birthdays & passport details are required while booking the tour.

Meeting Place & Boarding

Klook’s designated meeting & boarding place is in front of GaKuDen Bakery near Exit 4 of Ximen Station. The meeting place is very easy to find; you’ll also see a lot of other people (many of them are Filipinos) waiting for the buses.

On the day of the tour, we went to the designated meeting place at least 30 minutes before our scheduled trip. Our trip is due to leave at 9:00 am but we were already there at 8:30 am. Our tour guide (Hillary) called the groups one by one, asked for a copy of the Klook voucher (showed the voucher in my phone) & let us board the bus. Upon leaving the meeting place, she handed everyone a water bottle & started talking about Taiwan, Taipei & our destinations – Yehliu Geopark, Jiufen & Shifen.

Allow me to share with your our itinerary for the day tour. I will give you information about every stop & how long we stayed in every place. The trip to the 1st stop (Yehliu Geopark) took about an hour while the trip back to Taipei took about 1 hour & 20 minutes because of traffic in the city.

YEHLIU GEOPARK

Yehliu Geopark is a natural park consisting of interesting sedimentary rock figures formed through geological forces of sea erosion on softer rock layers. The most famous rock formations found here is the Queens Head. There are a lot more interesting formations found around the Geopark. We stayed around the park for 70 minutes.

YIN YANG SEA

The Yin Yang Sea is the dual-colored part of the northern coast of Taiwan. The blue-colored sea is mixed with the yellow-colored water coming from the old mine sites. The Yin Yang Sea viewing platform & 13 Layer Remains were located in the same area. We spent around 10 minutes in these 2 areas.

13 LAYER REMAINS

The 13 Layer Remains is a former smelter plant that used to process metal from the mountains. The plant was run by the state from the 1940’s & for about 30 years. The plant shut down operations when the metal resources ran out in the 1970’s.

GOLDEN WATERFALL

The Golden Waterfall doesn’t have true golds in it. Its ‘golden’ color is a mixture of regular rainfall in the mine sit & the rich metal elements in the riverbed. We stayed in the waterfall area for only 5 minutes.

JIUFEN

Jiufen used to be a small village of nine families. With the development of the gold mine industry in Taiwan, this village eventually became a town & housed those involved in the gold mining activities. At present, this village is a famous weekend holiday destination for both locals & visitors. The village features old Taiwanese & Chinese architecture & vibe. It also has numerous tea houses, cafes & souvenir shops. In 2001, the place became more famous because of the Japanese film Spirited Away. We stayed in Jiufen for 2 hours; we also had our lunch here.

SHIFEN WATERFALL

Shifen Waterfall is a scenic waterfall found 30 minutes away (by foot) from Shifen Station. This natural & beautiful body of water is regarded as one of the most scenic places in Taiwan. It is definitely worth the visit & more worth the walk towards the viewing platform in front of the falls. We went around the waterfall area for about an hour.

SHIFEN OLD STREET

Shifen Old Street is the famous place to fly the sky lanterns in Taiwan. This place also houses the Shifen Railway Station, which was initially used to transport coal during the Japanese invasion. The station is still used for scheduled train services to Riufang & nearby towns. The old street now is full of souvenir shops & food stalls that cater to the tourists & visitors. We experienced a pretty heavy rainfall whilst in Shifen; we were not able to fly a sky lantern. We opted for a walk around the shops & had some snacks in between. We still stayed here for an hour even if it was raining really hard.

After Shifen Old Street, we boarded the shuttle & took the trip back to Taipei. We were dropped off at the same meeting place – in front of GaKuDen Bakeryin Ximen. This pretty much sums up our Klook 9-hour day tour to Yehliu, Jiufen & Shifen.

VERDICT

Klook’s day tour was worth every peso – it made the 3 places accessible. I already tried using public transportation to Shifen & Jiufen in the past & I can definitely say that this day tour was super convenient & hassle-free. The addition of Hillary, our tour guide, was a plus. She shared a lot of facts & information about Taiwan’s history & culture. She also helped us book our place for lunch in Jiufen.

Shifen Waterfall – one of the highlights of the day tour. It was worth the walk to the view deck! 🙂

The order of itinerary & allotted times for all places were enough except for Jiufen. I wish we stayed longer in Jiufen because there’s a lot more to see, do & eat in the area. I don’t mind taking an extra hour in Jiufen, just to have more time to explore the place. The heavy rainfall definitely spoiled our excitement in flying a sky lantern, but it was all good. Believe it or not, I’ve been to Taiwan 3 times & I haven’t flown a single sky lantern. Perhaps another reason to fly back in the future? We’ll see.

Wish we had more time in Jiufen – I’d love to check all the shops & food stalls along the old street.

Overall, we enjoyed how relaxed & convenient this tour was planned. Thanks heaps to Klook & the tour operator for the fun, enriching & worthwhile day trip to Yehliu, Juifen & Shifen. I highly recommend this day trip by Klook to everyone – you no longer need to plan out how to go to this place & on what train or bus to catch. Klook has everything set for you!

TAICHUNG Photo Blog: Picturesque Places Outside Taipei

3 weeks ago, I shared with you a flight report on how our EVA Air flight from Taipei to Manila went last June. I mentioned in the post that my family went on a 4-day trip to Taipei to celebrate Father’s Day. I know I haven’t posted any detail about our whereabouts in Taipei but allow me to show you the details (& photos) of our 1st day in Taiwan. After arriving at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport, we rushed to our accommodation & left our bags. We immediately boarded the car to Taichung. Let me show to you which picturesque places we went to in this short day trip to the city.

Houli Flower Farm – one of Taichung’s top tourist attractions.. Such a beautiful place to visit!! 🙂

Taichung City is an industrial city located in central Taiwan. It is located 2 hours by land from Taipei, also 2 hours by train via the TRA (Taipei Railways Administration) train & about an hour by train via Taiwan High Speed Rail. The city has gained a lot of attention from international tourists because of its unique & picturesque spots. It is in fact a famous day trip taken by people outside Taipei.

The fastest (but also the most expensive) way to go to Taichung from Taiwan is via the high speed rail. The most affordable (& slow) way to reach the city is via the TRA rail. We were travelling with a 2-year old kid & we thought taking these trains will be very inconvenient. Going around Taichung on our own is also a different story.

We opted on renting a car (with driver) that will take us to Taichung (from Taipei), bring us around selected places & drive us back to Taipei. I searched the internet & found Albert Corrales of ACWorx Tours Taiwan. I arranged the transportation & itinerary with him & bargained for an affordable day tour rate. While Taichung has a long list of places to visit, Albert recommended that we only choose 3 so that we can make use of all our time in these places. We chose to visit the Green Fantasy Forest, Houli Flower Farm (of course) & the Rainbow Village.

The whole Taichung day trip took us about 10 hours. We arrived back in Taipei before dinner time. The package included all parking & driver fees. It didn’t include entrance fees (which we paid on the specific places) & lunch. N9 In Straya Series: BRISBANE Weekend – Quality Family Time In QLD

After spending a few days exploring Sydney & the nearby regions, I flew to Brisbane in Queensland to spend a weekend with my relatives. I told my aunt (my dad’s sister) about my Sydney trip & she immediately invited me to spend a few days with them in Brisbane. I haven’t seen them for about 4 years now so it was a perfect time to catch up. I gave it a go without any hesitations. My friends decided to stay in Sydney during this part of the trip.

Plane Ticket

Domestic plane fares in Australia are expensive, especially when booked last minute. I booked my Sydney-Brisbane-Sydney tickets about a month before the trip. It cost me AUD 194.41 return or that’s ₱7,855.20 in local currency, about 2/3 of my Manila-Sydney-Manila ticket which cost me a little over ₱11,500 return.

Took Virgin Australia from Sydney to Brisbane

I flew with Virgin Australia to Brisbane. I took one of the early Saturday morning flights. The one way fare cost me AUD 120.55 or ₱4,878.50 in our currency – quite expensive because of the schedule. Virgin Australia is a full-service airline so the fare included 23 kilograms check-in baggage allowance, 7 kilograms carry-on baggage allowance, in-flight snack & wireless in-flight entertainment accessed through the airline mobile application. Seat was comfortable; legroom was just right. The flight arrived Brisbane on time.

Flew with Tiger Air Australia back to Sydney

I took Tiger Air Australia, one of Australia’s low cost carriers, back to Sydney. I paid AUD 73.86 one way – about ₱2,976.70. Airfares in Australia are really expensive. The fare only included 7 kilograms carry-on baggage allowance. In-flight meals & check-in baggage allowance were offered for a fee. I didn’t avail these add-ons because I was only travelling light. The flight went well & arrived back in Sydney ahead of schedule.

Accommodation & Transportation

My accommodation in & transportation around Brisbane were care of my aunt & her family. They picked me up from the airport & took me around the city. I also stayed in their house so I didn’t bother booking an accommodation for this leg of my Australia trip.

Just in case you’re wondering how the transportation system works in Brisbane, they also have Translink‘s top-up card called go card. This card can be used in local trains & buses around Queensland.

Lone Park Koala Sanctuary

With my cousin – we played with some kangaroos!

We went to Lone Park Koala Sanctuary in Fig Tree Pocket, Queensland. It is the world’s oldest & largest koala sanctuary. It was only until my Brisbane visit when finally I saw koalas & kangaroos up close. The kangaroos here were tame unlike those I saw in Hunter Valley. I also got the chance to have a photo hugging a koala. The koalas are so cute!

Mount Coot-tha Lookout

Brisbane CBD from Mount Coot-tha Lookout 👀

We headed to Mount Coot-tha Lookout, also known as Brisbane Lookout, & had lunch overlooking the Brisbane CBD. We ordered food from the famous Kuta Cafe. The viewpoint is a must-see when in Brisbane because it gives a beautiful panoramic view of Brisbane up to Moreton Bay. Mount Coot-tha also has walking & bicycle tracks for those who are up for some adventure under the sun.

South Bank Parklands

South Bank Parklands is a recreational, cultural & social precinct located on the southern bank of the Brisbane River. Located in South Brisbane, this hub is home to different cultural institutions, restaurants, food boths & lively weekend markets. This parkland also gives a panoramic view of the Brisbane central business district.

The Wheel of Brisbane

The Wheel of Brisbane is an iconic Ferris wheel structure found in South Brisbane, within the South Bank Parklands. A ride to this Ferris wheel gives an 360-degree view of Brisbane. The ride takes about 10-15 minutes & includes an audio system which discusses some vital information about the city & its historical landmarks.

Brisbane River & 1 William Street skyscraper

Brisbane River is one of Queensland’s longest river which crosses various suburbs & cities & ends up on Moreton Bay. The river played a big role in Brisbane’s history in terms of transportation & navigation.

Brisbane central business district, commonly known as Brisbane City, is the center & capital of Queensland. Major financial, commercial, retail & business centers are found in this city. My relatives drove me around the city right before we had dinner. We also walked around one area of the CBD. The city was surprisingly laid back & quiet that weekend. My aunt told me that everyone in Brisbane or Queensland in general is relatively laid back & chill compared to other main cities like Sydney & Melbourne.

Hanwoori Korean BBQ Buffet

Unlimited Korean BBQ for dinner! 😋

We capped off the day by having dinner in Hanwoori Korean Restaurant in the city. The restaurant offers unlimited Korean BBQ & side dishes. It was a good & satisfying dinner. I never thought I’ll have Korean barbecue while in Australia. Thanks to my relatives for the treat!

Gold Coast Side Trip

My relatives took me to Gold Coast on my second day in Brisbane. We drove a little over an hour to the world famous surfers paradise. We drove around the city before going up to SkyPoint, Gold Coast’s highest attraction. This observation deck is located on Level 77 of Q1 Resort & Spa. The view deck is 230 meters above sea level & offers a 360-degree view of Gold Coast’s beaches, parkland & beyond. Tickets cost AUD 25 for adults & AUD 15 for kids & pensioners. Seafood lunch buffet! Yum~ 😋

We didn’t go for a swim on the beach because of limited time in Gold Coast plus the waves were strong. We then headed to Crown Plaza Surfers Paradise to have lunch. My uncle reserved a seafood buffet lunch (2nd buffet in less than 24 hours) for us in Four Winds 360° Revolving Restaurant – Australia’s only revolving restaurant. The buffet restaurant offered varieties of fresh seafood (crabs, prawns, mussels & oysters) & an excellent selection of hot dishes & desserts. My favorites, aside from all the seafood choices, were the following: roast turkey supreme, crispy pork belly with hoisin sauce & apple puree, ricotta & spinach tortellini & chicken tangerine. We headed back to Brisbane after lunch for some grocery errands. We had a simple Filipino dinner at my aunt’s house for my last night in Brisbane. I missed sinigang! I also had a few bottles of beer with my uncle after dinner to cap off my stay in Brisbane.

After spending the whole weekend with my relatives in Brisbane, I went to our local office for a quick visit then headed to Brisbane Airport for my flight back to Sydney. This basically ends my trip to Brisbane, Queensland. It was a short but a memorable visit. I got to spend some quality time with my relatives whom I haven’t seen for years. I would like to thank my aunt, uncle & cousins for accommodating me & taking me around Brisbane. Until next time!

Throwback Thursday Treat: 2016 New Year in Singapore

Another Thursday is here! It only means one thing – it’s time for a Throwback Thursday Treat! This time, I will take you to a small & progressive country named Singapore 🇸🇬. Late December 2015, my family & I flew to Singapore for a year-end trip. It was my sister & dad’s first out of the country trip so this family excursion was memorable. This trip marked my 4th time (2011, 2012 & same year, but in August 2015) in Singapore so I wasn’t really pressured to go to so many places.

I can’t remember what came into our minds why we chose Singapore but I think it was the best place for an ‘out of the country’ experience for first timers. We spent 5 days & 5 nights in the country. Let me share with you some details of this overseas family trip.

Plane Ticket

Christmas / New Year holiday season is one of the most expensive seasons to fly to all domestic & international destinations. It happens not just here in the Philippines but pretty much all over the world. Most people spend the holidays with their families in their hometowns or in popular tourist destinations.

We booked our tickets 4 months before & we paid around ₱6,300 each round-trip. This rate is already cheap considering we flew out of Manila during the December 30 holiday & we flew back Monday morning after the new year. We flew with Cebu Pacific Air; both flights utilized their Airbus A330 wide-body, twin-engine & mono-class (all economy) jet airliner.

Where We Stayed

Looking for the best accommodation during the holiday season was a bit stressful. We were a group of 8 so we had limited choices. Initially, we booked a 3-bedroom apartment near Orchard Road via Airbnb. The host cancelled our reservation 6 days before our trip due to some maintenance works in the unit. Almost all 3-bedroom apartments were fully booked. Luckily, there were still a few rooms available in Plush Pods Hostel.

This hostel has private & dormitory rooms. The kids stayed in a quadruple room while the adults got 2 double rooms. Each room had private shower & en suite. They also offered free Wi-Fi & free, simple breakfast of coffee, tea & toast. The hostel’s rates were still cheap (even during the holiday season) compared to the hotel / hostels nearby. Location was a plus – it’s just located at the back of the Bugis Junction Mall. It is also located near Bugis MRT Station on the East West (Green) Line & Downtown (Blue) Line.

This hostel used to be really good when we were there. I checked the recent TripAdvisor reviews; looks like it hasn’t been maintained really well. Sad.

Where We Welcomed 2016

Singapore, just like any other major city in the world, has its own New Year Countdown. People gather around the Marina Bay Area & wait for 12 midnight to welcome the new year. The highlights, as always, are the light projections in the Fullerton Hotel facade & the grand fireworks display from Marina Bay. The family already agreed to welcome 2016 in Marina Bay area.

Everything changed when we saw a family friend of ours after the New Year’s Eve Mass in St. Joseph’s Church in Bugis. They invited us to welcome the new year with them in their flat in Concourse Skyline. Their place had a very nice view of the Marina Bay fireworks. All of us enjoyed good food & company that night!

How We Went Around Singapore

Singapore is a tourist-friendly country. Public transportation – train lines & bus routes – take you pretty much everywhere in the country, from one end to the other end. The airport is 30 minutes away from the city center.

Shrek’s Castle in Universal Studios Singapore

There are various tourist passes available for people visiting for 2-3 days. We opted for the EZ-Link Card because we stayed for 5 days. This is the country’s contact-less stored value card similar to Japan’s IC Card, Hong Kong’s Octopus Card, Taipei’s Easy Card & South Korea’s T-Money Pass. Basically, you load up credit in the card & just tap every time you go in & out of a train station & every time you take the bus. This card can also be used in convenience stores & some establishments.

We used the EZ-Link Card in all train rides within Singapore. It was very handy & easy to use.

Where We Went In Singapore

I’ve been to Singapore a number of times & I keep coming back to the same places / areas for sightseeing & shopping.

Bugis

Formerly a trading area of Bugis people from South Sulawesi, Indonesia, Bugis is now a known shopping area in Singapore. The Bugis Street Market & Bugis Junction Shopping Mall are two of the most visited shopping places in the area. This is one of the best places to get your souvenirs when in Singapore.

Access: Bugis MRT Station – East West (Green) & Downtown (Blue) Lines

Haji Lane

Haji Lane is a tiny alley composed of shop houses, cafes & bars (at night). It is usually the hang out & shopping area of the ‘fashionista’ young people – both locals & tourists. You will see specialty shops, cafes & restaurants in this small lane. The famous colorful mural can also be found here.

Access: Bugis MRT Station – East West (Green) & Downtown (Blue) Lines

Little India

From its name, Little India is an ethnic district where you can find the Singaporean-Indian community. The area also has some nice shops (with cheap finds) & cheap hawker centers.

Access: Little India MRT Station – North East (Purple) & Downtown (Blue) Lines

Chinatown

Chinatown is the ethnic district for the Chinese community. This area is characterized by boutique cafes & Chinese restaurants. This is also a good place to go shopping for souvenirs; prices in this area are relatively cheaper.

Merlion Park

The Merlion is Singapore’s national icon. This half lion & half fish statue is found in Merlion Park facing the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. According to the Visit Singapore website, the fish body symbolizes Singapore’s humble beginnings as a fishing village called ‘Temasek‘ (meaning sea town in Old Javaese); & the lion head represent’s the country’s original name ‘Singapura,’ meaning lion city in Malay.

The Helix Bridge

The Helix Bridge is an architecturally designed pedestrian bridge that eases the access to The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands & the Marina Bay Hotel itself from the Marina Center area. It was also in this area where we found the S$ 1.20 ice cream sandwich.

Access: Promenade MRT Station – Circle (Orange) & Downtown (Blue) Lines; This can also be accessed by a few minutes walk from Marina Bay MRT Station – North South (Red) & Circle (Orange) Lines

Marina Bay Sands Hotel & The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands

The Helix Bridge ends at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. This is one of Singapore’s biggest & most luxurious shopping malls. You can find mid to high end clothing, accessories & footwear brands here. This shopping mall is connected to one of Singapore’s iconic landmarks – The Marina Bay Sands Hotel. This hotel is composed of 3 tall hotel buildings & a boat-like structure on top (connecting the 3 buildings) which contains the a spectacular infinity pool & a sky park. Visitors can pass by the hotel buildings if they are going to the Gardens By The Bay from the Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands.

Gardens By The Bay

Gardens By The Bay is a man-made nature park located in a reclaimed area in Marina Bay. This 101-hectare park consists of 3 waterpark gardens – Bay South, Bay East & Bay Central. Each garden has its own set of attractions. We only visited the part that is directly behind Marina Bay Sands Hotel due to time limitations. If you want to explore the whole place, I recommend spending one whole day in this amazing place.

Universal Studios Singapore

Universal Studios Singapore is one of the country’s main tourist attractions for kids & kids at heart who grew up watching movies & shows created by Universal Studios. The theme park is located within Resort World Sentosa in Sentosa Island. One should spend the whole day here from morning until the evening & make sure to try all possible rides. My favorite rides are Battlestar Galactica – Human & Cylon, Transformers 4D & Revenge of the Mummy. Make sure to buy the Express Pass if you want to “skip” the long queue in these rides.

Orchard Road

Orchard Road is Singapore retail & entertainment heaven. This is the best place to splurge on clothes, bags & shoes. This 2.2 km long road features a number of affordable to luxury retail shops & shopping malls. You can also find a number of famous hotel brands in this area. This is the go-to place for everyone who wants to go shopping in Singapore. I suggest that you spend at least half a day here to go around.

What We Missed Visiting

We only had a few days in Singapore so it was not possible to visit all nice places. Sad to say we missed a few good ones like the Singapore Botanic Gardens, National Gallery Singapore, Singapore Zoo & Night Safari, Singapore Art Museum, Clarke Quay & Boat Quay. I’ll definitely check out these places when I get the chance to go back to Singapore in the future.

PS. I would consider Singapore’s Changi Airport as another must-explore in Singapore. This airport was voted the World’s Best Airport for 5th year in a row in last year’s Skytrax World Airport Awards. The airport recently opened it’s Terminal 4 featuring world class design & amenities. Make sure to go to the airport earlier to explore the airport before checking in for your flight.

Looking back, this year-end / new year trip was fun & memorable. You always don’t get the chance to welcome the new year with your family in a different country. We had endless laughs & good memories to cherish for the rest of our lives. I don’t travel with my family that much (I always go alone lol) but I think these trips are good to have once in a while. I’m already looking forward to our next family trip. Where will it be? Stay tuned.
